Route: Rice, Birds and Marshe.

Rice paddies, flamingos and other birds

“Although progress was very slow and there were long periods of trials and failures during the first half of the last century, a large part of these marshes on both sides of the Guadalquivir were transformed into the immense domain of rice fields that exists today” (Suárez, 2010, 64). (Suárez , 2010, 64)
The transformed marshes of the Guadalquivir and the protected areas of Doñana constitute a territorial unit where natural areas coexist with productive spaces destined for rice cultivation. This area is a clear example of the evolution of the world of water and has several protagonists: the rice farmers who have developed a way of life based on the possibilities of this environment through rice cultivation and the Guadalquivir river, which in its last phase of filling constitutes a marshland made up of clay, saline, the result of the arrival of seawater.

We will leave Seville, cross the Guadalquivir and arrive at La Puebla del Río, an area of rice fields. After getting an idea of the immensity of the rice fields, we will go to the factory where the rice is prepared and packaged.

Rice cultivation is in summer, so at any other time of the year, the visit can be made at any time of the year. The flamingos and other birds take advantage of these places to feed and thus flood the marshes with their voices and colours.
We can’t leave without tasting the rice, the typical rice with duck of the marshes, so we will go to a local restaurant. Don’t worry if you don’t want rice or duck, we assure you that there is a variety to choose from, just let us know at the time of booking.
