Off-road expedition to Senegal

Morocco, Mauritania, Gambia, Senegal.

Africa is enchanting and we propose a route from the south of Spain to the south of Senegal (off-road vehicles, 4×4 vans, buggies or camper vans, off-road motorbikes).
This adventure will take us from the arid lands of the Sahara desert in the north to the lush tropical forests of southern Senegal.

Our adventure begins in the city of Tarifa, where we will have a welcome dinner and a reception for the participants. The next morning we will try to catch the first ferry to Tangier, after clearing customs we will head for Marrakech, crossing Morocco from north to south, stopping in Sidi Ifni, El Aaiún, Dakhla and Cabo Barbas.

After crossing the border between Morocco and Mauritania, we will see the track of the longest train in the world, which belongs to the Slim company and brings raw iron from Zouirat in the interior of the desert 600 kms. It is two kilometres long and moves slowly by locomotive trains, each wagon carrying a load of 70 tonnes of the orange ironstone. We will head to Cape Tafarit, in the Arguin Bank National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the next stop will be Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. This is a good place for owners of Toyotas, here they can fix or buy parts at half the cost of Spain (80% of the country’s car fleet is Toyota), from here we will leave for the Diama border between Mauritania and Senegal.

The Djoudj National Bird Park, in Senegal, is located about sixty kilometres north of Saint-Louis, and is the third most important ornithological reserve in the world, with pelicans, cormorants, pink flamingos, etc. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, and is usually visited by canoe, but we will do it in 4x4s.
We will stroll through the streets of Saint-Louis, which was the first colonial capital of the country and a Portuguese and later French factory, preserves the style of the 19th century and is an island more for travellers than for tourists, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
The Langue de Barbarie National Park is located at the mouth of the Senegal River, 25 kms south of Saint Louis. It is made up of the three islands of the Langue de Barbarie, Gandiole Island and two small islets.
Afterwards we will head to the mythical Pink Lake, although it is not always visible in this colour, as it is due to the high content of salt, algae and micro-organisms in the water combined with other factors.
After some bureaucratic formalities, we will continue our route towards Mbour, Joal-Fadiout, Dijifer, making a short stop to visit Fadiouth, (the island of shells), we continue our route on tracks until our arrival at Djifer, situated on a narrow sandy peninsula between the sea and the river, installation in our typical huts.

Our stopover in Gambia will be Banjul and Tanji, and the next day we will return to Senegal and stay at Seleki, Solidarity Camps. We will head to the coast, passing through forests and mangroves to Cap Skirring, a place known for its fantastic white sandy beaches, depending on the tide we will go to Nikine, at the mouth of the Cassamance, along the beach or along the beautiful sandy track that runs through the forests of baobas and cashew trees. We will spend the day relaxing on this beautiful beach where we can sunbathe, swim, fish or stroll along the fine sands.
The next stops in this country will be Zinguichor, Sokone and again Saint Louis, from where we start our return journey north to Nouakchott, back in Mauritania.
After crossing into Morocco, we will spend the night in Cabo Barbas, El Aaiún, Agadir and Assilah, where we will have a farewell dinner and the following day we will arrive in Tangier and our last stop will be in Tarifa.
